Constituency News

  • Gold jumper
    Article: Oct 6, 2020

In the latest exciting draw we had a complete dominance of the single digit with the winners being:

    • 1st - 7
    • 2nd - 9
    • 3rd - 2

And with no 2 getting a prize for the second month in a row. We need new competitors to challenge this 2!

£5 a month with the winner taking 25% of the total takings. Contact Andy at andy@baker6.org.uk to beat the man who is 2. Good Luck!

Ask the Prime Minister about this! As he says:

"Winston Churchill identified what he saw as the special genius of the English-speaking peoples.

For my part I think we must be careful to avoid any such conceit or complacency that English-speakers are especially blessed; but it is certainly true that there is a series of interconnected ideas that have been highly successful, and that I certainly believe in.

  • Gold Club 1st draw
    Article: Sep 2, 2020

Undaunted by virtual meetings the Gold Club made its first draw over zoom with the Chairman of the Club committee, Roger Dobson, keeping a watchful if distant eye on the Treasurer, Andy Baker, organising the draw. It was back to the usual paper tickets drawn from a wooden bowl, as a suitable high-tech but scrupulously impartial system was not available at short notice.

  • Ed Davey New Leader
    Article: Aug 28, 2020

The Liberal Democrats have elected a new leader but an old hand. Someone who has spent a lifetime involved in environmental causes and actually implemented legislation on this as a minister in the often mocked coalition government. A government that maybe does not look too bad now when compared with our current masters!

  • Lib Dem Draw - 2020
    Article: Aug 4, 2020

Penrith and the Border need local money in order to make a decent attempt at running local campaigns. Hence we have set up a Gold Club, a sort of mini lottery! In return for a monthly ticket payment the members get the exciting chance of scooping 25%, 15% or 10% of the money collected for that month. And at much better odds than the National Lottery, even if for a 'slightly' smaller amount!

  • Westminster
    Article: Jun 23, 2020

Westminster's broken political system is shutting out people who need their voices heard now more than ever during the coronavirus pandemic.

Our democracy doesn't need piecemeal change, it needs a radical overhaul.

On 8th June our Constitutional Affairs spokesperson Wendy Chamberlain led a debate in the House of Commons calling for a radical overhaul of Westminster politics.

  • Gladstone's Library (Gladstone's Library)
    Article: Jun 11, 2020
    In Gladstone's Library Website

"At the core of our being, we at Gladstone's Library believe that Black Lives Matter. We also believe that if it is the democratic will, after due process, to remove statues of William Gladstone, our founder, we would not stand in the way. Nor, we think, would Gladstone himself - who worked tirelessly on behalf of democratic change. This is why we believe that what matters is how we live today, our values, our democratic process and political involvement. William Gladstone whose politics were strikingly different to his Tory father's politics and values, was the first British politician to lead a left-leaning government and to institute dramatic democratic changes when he introduced the secret ballot, universal education and a foreign policy based on freedom and liberty and not the aggrandisement of Empire."
